Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, is a biographical thriller film released in 2023. The movie features Cillian Murphy in the lead role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned American theoretical physicist recognized as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his pivotal involvement in the Manhattan Project—an initiative during World War II that led to the development of the first nuclear weapons. Adapted from the 2005 biography "American Prometheus" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the narrative unfolds Oppenheimer's career, emphasizing his academic pursuits, leadership of the Manhattan Project, and the subsequent challenges he faced, particularly his fall from grace following a security hearing in 1954.

The cast includes Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer's wife, "Kitty," Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, the head of the Manhattan Project, Robert Downey Jr. as U.S. Atomic Energy Commission member Lewis Strauss, and Florence Pugh as Oppenheimer's lover, Jean Tatlock, a communist. Noteworthy supporting actors encompass Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.

The film's production was announced in September 2021 after Universal Pictures secured Nolan's screenplay in a bidding war. Casting commenced in October 2021, with Murphy as the first to join, followed by the rest of the ensemble cast between November 2021 and April 2022. Pre-production began in January 2022 and filming spanned from February to May. Oppenheimer was shot using a combination of IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film, incorporating, for the first time, scenes in IMAX black-and-white film photography. Nolan adhered to his signature style, relying extensively on practical effects while minimizing the use of computer-generated imagery. Jennifer Lame handled the editing, and Ludwig Göransson composed the score. The film, Nolan's fourth to receive an R-rating in the United States, premiered at Le Grand Rex in Paris on July 11, 2023, before its theatrical release in the United States and the United Kingdom on July 21 by Universal.

Oppenheimer's simultaneous release with Warner Bros.'s Barbie resulted in the Barbenheimer cultural phenomenon, urging audiences to experience both films as a double feature. The movie garnered critical acclaim, grossing over $954 million globally, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2023, the top-grossing World War II-themed film, the highest-grossing biographical film, and the second-highest-grossing R-rated film. Recognized by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute as one of the top-ten films of 2023, Oppenheimer received eight Golden Globe Award nominations and various accolades.
